What’s bigger than a title bout? Two title bouts.
The main card has been announced for UFC 239, to fans delight, we’re in for a doubleheader. Taking place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday 7 July, we’ll see two pound-for-pound champions put their belts on the line.
Title holder, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones (24-1-0, 1NC) is one of MMA’s most well-known characters. Having been suspended in 2016 after USADA ruled Jons had consumed male enhancement pills, Jones returned in July 2017 to mix opinions – fast becoming one of the sport’s biggest villains.
This will be Jon’s third championship bout defending his belt in eight months, most recently defeating Anthony Smith at UFC 234. The challenger, Thiago ‘Merreta’ Santos (21-6-0) currently sits #3 on the category leaderboard. This will be his first title belt challenge for Santos after debuting at UFC 163 in 2013.
Not to be outdone, Amanda ‘Lioness’ Nunes (17-4-0) will defend her belt against crowd favourite, Holly ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ Holm (12-4-0). Holm grew to fame having taken on the then hands down favourite, Ronda Rousey in Melbourne, November 2015.
This event will mark Holmes first fight at Bantamweight in over two years, which could prove to be critical information heading into the event.
