The biggest cross-code battle is coming, former AFL player Barry Hall is set to take on NRL heavyweight turned professional boxer, Paul Gallen.
Both known for their on field ‘bay boy’ personas, Hall and Gallen were consistently in hot water for most of their sporting careers, pushing the rules as far as they would go and taking their anger out on often unsuspecting opposition.
Gallen has taken up boxing full time since retiring from NRL, although his first official professional wins came while still contracted to play professional rugby. Currently riding a seven win streak, Gallen has quickly built a solid portfolio of wins across Australian and New Zealand.
Hall will make his professional debut in the bout, his last pro-bout taking place when he was just 16, which came a year after he claimed the Victorian age title. Now 42 years of age, Hall was rumoured to have been returning to the boxing realm for a number years, although media duties post his AFL career took precedence.
We have Danny Green to thank for this fight coming to fruition, the Australian boxing great has been working behind the scenes for many months to pull this bout together.
In what will be a bruising night, Gallen remains confident despite the words of warning he’s received ahead of facing Hall in the ring.
“I don’t think he’s going to be able to keep up with the pace I’m going to go at. He won’t be able to cop it so once we get in there, it’s going to be a shock for him.”
Identical twins and rising stars, Andrew and Jason Maloney will also appear on the card. Andrew to take on Elton Dharry for the WBA world interim super flyweight title, while Jason will take on Nicaraguan fighter Dixon Flores for the Australian WBA Oceania bantamweight title.
