Only two women have defeated Valentina Shevchenko in MMA. Liz Carmouche is one of them, and she’ll get the chance to do it again this summer.
UFC have announced, Shevchenko will defend her flyweight title against Carmouche in the main event in Uruguay on Sunday 11 August AEST. The highly anticipated bout will be a rematch from the now infamous 2010 encounter where Carmouche won by a second-round TKO.
After the loss to Carmouche, Shevchenko went on to win 10 of her next 12 fights, the two losses both at the hands of Amanda Nunes. Most recently, Shevchenko defeated Jessica Eye in a second-round knockout to record her first UFC title defense.
Carmouche will be heading into her second UFC title fight, along with Ronda Rousey, Carmouche made history in February 2013, when they headlined UFC 157, in what was the promotion’s first-ever women’s fight. Her attempt then was unsuccessful, losing the bout by submission late in the opening round.
Moving down to 125 pounds in 2017, Carmouche has rebounded with back-to-back wins over Lucie Pudilova and Maia, a former Invicta FC champion.
The re-match many have been waiting for in the women’s Flyweight division. Will Shevchenko relinquish her belt to Carmouche this time around?
