For the first time ever, the UFC will head to PNC Arena in Raleigh, with a pivotal bout in the heavyweight division, as the No. 3 ranked contender Curtis Blaydes looks to secure the most important victory of his career when he takes on the former UFC heavyweight champion and No. 4 ranked Junior Dos Santos.
Dos Santos was previously set to fight Alexander Volkov in the main event of UFC Fight Night 163 in Moscow, Russia before a bad leg infection forced him out of the fight. He was ultimately replaced by teammate, Greg Hardy, who lost a unanimous decision to Volkov.
Junior saw his three-fight win streak come to an end after he was knocked out by Francis Ngannou this past June.
For Blaydes, he’s won two straight fights, most recently defeating Shamil Abdurakhimov at UFC 242 a few months ago - the win was his sixth of seven overall dating back to 2017. Curtis has been calling for bigger fights for a while now, and Dos Santos fits the bill.
However, as a former champion, Dos Santos is looking to get back into a title conversation which would ideally come with another signature knockout victory. He holds the record for the most knockdowns in UFC heavyweight history, Dos Santos has wins over some of the biggest names in the sport, including former UFC champions Fabricio Werdum, Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir as well as the current champ, Stipe Miocic. If victorious, this will secure his 16th victory in the Octagon and stake his claim as the next title contender.
