The UFC is headed to China for Jessica Andrade’s (20-6-0) first strawweight title defense after picking up the coveted top spot earlier this year.
Her challenger however, is a surprise, after many were holding out for a Rose Namajunas rematch, or a showdown with the undefeated Tatiana Suarez, even a date with strong competitor, Michelle Waterson. Instead, Weili Zhang (19-1-0) will get the opportunity to become the first Chinese fighter to compete for a UFC title on home soil. Despite the controversy, Andrade predicts a thrilling stand-up battle.
“She is a really tough fighter. She’s fought Tecia Torres, whom I also fought and I know how hard it is to fight Tecia. After seeing what she did in that fight, I believe the UFC set up a really good fight. We will surely end the card on a high note, it’ll be fireworks the whole time.”
Zhang has won 19 consecutive fights after losing her professional debut in November 2013, four specifically under the UFC banner, including a pair of notable wins over Tecia Torres and Jessica Aguilar. Now, she has the opportunity to make history for China.
