It’s the showdown Australia has been waiting for.
Australia’s very own middleweight champion, Robert ‘The Reaper’ Whittaker (21-4-0) will defend his title against interim middleweight titleholder, and NZ representative, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya (170-0-0).
Rising star, Adesanya is undefeated to date in his professional MMA career, and has been one of the most active fighters on the roster. He most recently took the interim title after a spectacular back and forth match with Kelvin Gastelum in April.
Whittaker hasn’t fought in a year, after his ‘Fight of the Year’ performance against Yoel Romero at UFC 225 which led him to champion status. Originally scheduled to defend his title against Gastelum on home soil this February, Whittaker was rushed into emergency abdominal hernia surgery just hours before the fight.
The UFC then went on to schedule an interim middleweight title fight between Gastelum and Adesanya at UFC 226, where Adesanya was able to capture the title. As Adesanya has risen in success, the confidence grows too. The parting words from a recent interview with Eyes on the Game featured his prediction for the upcoming bout. “Smoking him. First round, second round, whatever it is. I’m smoking him,” Adesanya concluded.
Whittaker, typically not one for pre-fight back and forth was all but silent at the UFC 243 press conference last week, while Adesanya didn’t let up with onslaught of verbal jabs. When asked what Whittaker thinks of Adesanya, Whittaker grinned.
“What do I think about him? I don’t think about him.”
